A symbol of greater inclusion and unity, Diadji Diop’s sculpture is designed to remind us of humanity’s shared struggle to overcome disease.

One big lesson of the COVID-19 pandemic is that such global challenges can be met only by collective action across borders. We will always be stronger when we are united.

For the artist, sporting endeavour - whether at local or Olympic level - is an inspiring vehicle for this spirit of unity, providing a context in which social, economic and political problems are somehow temporarily suspended as we strive simply to do, to be, better. The sustained integrity of this shared effort is exactly what we need to defeat pandemics and other such global threats.
